Biographical Information

Outfielder Fred Tauby was a professional baseball player for seventeen seasons, covering three different decades of time from 1926 through 1942. The twenty-year-old made his first appearance with the Terre Haute Tots of the class B Three-I League. His first stretch in the minor leagues carried him until September 1, 1935 when he was brought up for a 13-game look by the American League Chicago White Sox. Fred would get four base-hits in 32 at-bats for a .125 average.

This showing didn't interest anyone and Tauby spent 1936 with the Dallas Steers of the class A Texas League where he hit .311 in 140 games. Late in the season, August 25, to be exact, the White Sox sold his contract to the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League. Fred would spend eleven games with twenty at-bats and no base hits for the Phillies and this was the sum-total of Fred's major league career.

Tauby would spend the rest of the 1937 season with the Little Rock Travelers and the International League Baltimore Orioles, hitting .292 in a split-season affair. The outfielder spent the next five seasons in the minors with three different clubs. With the Baltimore club again in 1938, he hit .309 and 16 home runs - these were his best minor league figures since he had hit .358 with 25 homers for the class C Durham Bulls in 1930.

Fred finished out his pro baseball career with the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League in 1942, giving him career minor league figures of .307 at the plate with 115 home runs while appearing in 1,982 games. Fred would be inducted into the United States Navy in early 1943 and served for the duration of World War II. He worked out with the Oakland club in early 1946 but was given his release, finishing his baseball run at 40 years of age.

After baseball, Tauby stayed on the west coast and worked as a wholesale liquor salesman, until his death on November 23, 1955 at his home in Concord, CA at the age of 49.
