Biographical Information

Infielder Fred Harrington played in the minor leagues for 15 seasons and managed at that level for three. Though he played at Triple-A for four seasons, he never reached the major leagues.

He began his career at 18 years old, playing for the Concord Weavers in 1941 and remaining there through 1942. He missed 1943 to 1945 while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Returning in 1946, he suited up for the Wenatchee Chiefs and Triple-A Sacramento Solons in his first year back. From 1947 to 1949, he played for the Triple-A Columbus Red Birds, hitting .302 in 97 games the in 1948. He played for the Louisville Colonels for most of 1949. On May 17, 1949, he was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Cot Deal. He was with the Birmingham Barons in 1950 and the Shreveport Sports from 1951 to 1952. He also played for the Monroe Sports in 1952, returning to them in 1953, hitting .308 in 121 games that year. After spending 1954 with the Reidsville Luckies, Harrington played for the High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms for the final four years of his career, hitting a career-high 10 home runs in 1957.

He managed the Monroe Sports in 1952 and 1953, leading them to a 66-60 record and a 4th-place finish the former year and a 50-76 mark (8th-place finish) the latter. He skippered the Reidsville Luckies to a 56-83, 7th-place finish in 1954.
