Biographical Information[edit]

Fred Crane saw most of his big league action with the 1875 Brooklyn Atlantics, a 2-42 outfit. Crane hit .210 in 81 at bats, driving in four runs. At 34, Crane was one of the oldest players on the team. The SABR biographies of Asa Brainard and Dickey Pearce state that Crane, along with Frank Norton and Dickey Pearce, jumped from the amateur Atlantics (most likely in 1866) to the Excelsiors, but Pearce and Crane came back to the Atlantics in August. The book Baseball Fever: Early Baseball in Michigan indicates that Fred was "the celebrated second base of the Atlantics" in 1866, and that he might move to Detroit. In 1869, he was still playing for the amateur Atlantics.
