Biographical Information

Fred Clay Tenney pitched a number of games in the Union Association in 1884. He was originally listed in one boxscore as "Thompson", with a battery-mate named "Bill Rollinson", and the first name "Arthur" somehow became attached to him. However, both players were from Brown University and playing under assumed names that day. The catcher's real name was "William Winslow" and the pitcher was Tenney. To make matters more complicated, there was another player with a similar name on the team, OF/1B Tom Tinney, who became mistakenly listed as "Fred Tenney," and neither of these two players are the other Fred Tenney, whose career started in 1894, either.
