Biographical Information[edit]
Frey Peniche played, coached and managed in the minors. His first name is often spelled "Fray" in sources.
Peniche signed with the Detroit Tigers at age 18. He debuted in 1995 with the GCL Tigers and hit only .157/.193/.205 with 31 strikeouts in 83 AB, though he played error-free ball in the outfield. In '96, he batted .193/.278/.277 with the same club, with 39 whiffs in 119 AB. He fielded .996, his new primary position. During 1997, he hit .264/.347/.302 with the GCL Tigers and again fielded .996 at first. Had he qualified, he would have led Gulf Coast League first basemen in fielding, .002 over Brett Roneberg.
Frey fell to .206/.216/.294 in limited action for the 1998 Jamestown Jammers to finish his career with a .208/.274/.269 batting line.
Peniche then went into coaching with the 1999 Oneonta Tigers. He was a coach for the DSL Tigers from 2000-2006. In 2007, he was promoted to manager of the DSL Tigers, going 45-20 to finish second in his division behind the DSL Nationals 1 (who won it all). He fell to 30-42 in 2008 then was 37-32 in 2009. Peniche returned to the DSL Tigers in 2010 for a final season.
Peniche moved to the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 2011 and has managed a Cardinals Dominican Summer League team since then. The Cardinals fielded two DSL teams in 2018-2021 and Peniche managed the Blue team. He was slated to return in that role in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season.
