Biographical Information

Third baseman/outfielder Frank Packard hit .366 with 21 home runs and 123 RBIs with the Charlotte Hornets in 1931 to win the Piedmont League Triple Crown. In addition, that year he led the circuit with 145 runs scored, 185 hits, 313 total bases, 17 triples, and a .620 slugging average. The next year, he played for the Baltimore Orioles of the International League and had a .313 average, 28 homers, and 98 RBI.

Away from the diamond, however, Packard had a reputation for drinking and partying that cost him his shot at the big leagues. When his contract was sold to the New York Giants in 1932, he went out on the town to celebrate. He ended up running into the Giants' chief scout, who then had the deal cancelled.

From 1933 to 1935, Packard bounced from team to team and saw little playing time.

Packard was the third manager of the Mount Airy Reds during the 1936 Bi-State League season. George Shader was the original manager but was replaced on July 7th by Elbert Conway. Conway was replaced by Packard on July 26th.

After World War II was a coach at Davidson College in 1951.
