Biographical Information[edit]

Frank Maldonado played middle infield for Victor Valley Community College before completing his undergraduate education at California Lutheran University. Immediately after graduation Maldonado returned to Barstow High School and coached the baseball team there in 1997-1998. He then became the hitting and infield coach at Barstow Community College where he remained for another two years. Maldonado's work at the community college began a lengthy career as a college coach. During this phase of his career he also spent the summer of 1999 as the head coach for the Kehl Mosquitos of the German Baseball Federation.

Maldonado returned to Cal Lutheran in 2000 and stayed there through 2005 as an assistant coach responsible for hitting. Cal Lutheran's hitters and infielders topped the Conference in fielding and hitting each year during his tenure. In addition, CLU led the nation in scoring in 2001 and finished fifth nationally in double plays in 2004. His next move was to Division II powerhouse the University of Tampa where he served as the hitting coach from 2006 to 2010. The Spartans won the Division II national championship in 2006 and 2007. After the 2007 season he also coached the Oahu Paddlers in the summertime Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League.

Maldonado continued to climb the college coaching ladder with his next stop at Division I University of South Florida where he coached from 2011-2014. He initially served as the team's volunteer assistant coach but moved into the role of Director of Baseball Operations for his last six months. Maldonado returned to the University of Tampa as hitting coach in 2015 when and helped them win another national title.

The years of working as an assistant coach in a variety of roles finally led to a head coaching position with Division III Greensboro College in 2016. He stayed with the Pride through 2019 and the team showed improvement under his leadership.

In 2020, the Tampa Bay Rays hired Maldonado as a hitting coach for the GCL Rays before the minor league season was cancelled due to COVID-19. He returned to this level in 2021 with the renamed FCL Rays. He received a promotion in 2022 when the Rays named him their Manager of Hitting Development. after the season he served as the hitting coach for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League. Maldonado became a manager with the FCL Rays in 2023.
