Biographical Information[edit]

Frank Knauss pitched well in 1890 for the Columbus Solons of the American Association, going 17-12 with a 2.81 ERA that was third best in the league. After that, he had a few appearances each year in the National League in 1891, 1892, 1894, and 1895, going a total of 0-4 in those years.

Knauss knew how to draw a walk, getting 12 walks to go along with the 24 hits he achieved in 1890.

When he jumped to the Cleveland Spiders in 1891, he was a teammate of the 24-year-old Cy Young, who was a year older than Frank.

"KNAUSS, THE PITCHER, SECURED. The engagement of Frank Knauss, the left-handed pitcher of the Detroits, was a clever bit of work . . . He has made a famous record with the Detroits, and I believe the youngster is stout enough to keep it up, although a general feeling prevails that left-handed twirlers are not, as a rule, stayers." - commentary by Sporting Life's Columbus correspondent, in the June 28, 1890 issue
