Fort Lee, VA

From BR Bullpen

Fort Lee is a United States Army post located in central Virginia, immediately east of Petersburg, VA. It was created just after the U.S. declared war on Germany in World War I, in June of 1917. It was originally known as Camp Lee and served as a state mobilization camp. It was handed over to the state of Virginia after the war but re-opened during World War II and resumed operations in February 1941. It became a permanent establishment in 1950, when it took the name of Fort Lee.

Luke Appling was among the men who passed through the facility after his induction in the military in 1944.
