Biographical Information[edit]
Folkert Boerum was a catcher who played for the Brooklyn Atlantics of the National Association of Base Ball Players from 1857 to 1861. He apparently didn't play in 1859 due to the fact that he was staying in Europe that year. Before joining the Atlantics, he played for the Harmony of Brooklyn ball club. Boerum was known as a "gentleman" by many, and did a good deal of charity work outside of baseball. "A History of Long Island From its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time" (published in 1905) describes Boerum as one of the "most highly regarded" people in the area.
He is incorrectly listed under the name "Polkert" in some sources. This is likely due to people misreading blotchy Fs as Ps in old papers.
