Fabrizio Fabrizi

From BR Bullpen

Fabrizio Fabrizi was named Umpire of the Year in Serie B in 2005, Serie A2 in 2008 and the Italian Baseball League in 2012 and 2016. He has worked the 2015 Premier 12, 2017 World Baseball Classic and 2023 World Baseball Classic among other international events. In the 2015 Premier 12, he made a controversial call in Team Canada's 9-8 win over host Taiwan. With the 9-8 score, a men on second and two outs in the 8th, Chih-Hao Chang's long fly to right was caught by Tyson Gillies, who hit the wall, causing the ball to pop out and into the glove of Rene Tosoni. Fabrizi initially ruled the ball had hit the wall, making it a non-catch, but the call was overturned by the umpiring crew following a protest by Canadian skipper Ernie Whitt. He was attacked by Castenaso captain Riccardo Bassi after a game in 2019 and had to be hospitalized after being punched in the face.

His sister Sabrina is an international softball umpire.
