Biographical Information

Erv Brame went 52-37 as a major league pitcher and also hit .306.

Brame was born in Big Rock, TN, in far northern Tennessee northwest of Nashville. After going 18-9 for Jersey City in 1927, he split his time in 1928 between Indianapolis, where he went 4-1, and the majors, where he was 7-4 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1929, he went 16-11, and the next year he was 17-8. 1930 was also his best year with the bat as he hit .353 (the tenth-best batter in the NL, Hack Wilson, hit .356). Erv also led the NL that season in complete games with 22. Brame was also used as a pinch-hitter, going 25-for-70 in that role during his major league career. After an okay 1931 (9-13, 4.21) and a tough 1932 (3-1 with a 7.41 ERA and 84 hits allowed in 51 innings), Erv was finished as a big leaguer. In 1933, he was back in the minors with Toronto, going 9-7. He also played in the minors in 1934-35 and 1937, and managed part of 1937 for the Paducah Indians.

Brame died at age 48 of a heart attack. His obituary in the New York Times remembered that he was not only a pitcher but also a successful pinch-hitter.
