Biographical Information[edit]
Ernie Courtney played six years in the big leagues. After appearing with four teams between 1902 and 1903, he settled in with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1905-1908, seeing fairly regular action at third and first base. He led the National League in games played and was third in plate appearances and sacrifice hits in 1905. Courtney was mainly a third baseman, but was also used liberally at the other infield positions as well as in left field.
Ernie was born in Des Moines, IA in 1875. He was the third major leaguer from Des Moines, after Ducky Holmes and Herm McFarland. He played for minor league teams based in California during 1898-1902. He played for Buffalo in 1904 before coming back to the majors, moving back down from 1909-1910 to Providence. In 1911, he was with Memphis. Ernie worked as a hotelkeeper before his death in Buffalo in 1920.
