Biographical Information[edit]

"Ernest Burch will prove a valuable man. Besides being a fine fielder and base runner, he is a safe, hard hitter, and will be just the man for left field . . ." - Sporting Life, January 27, 1886

Ernie Burch first appeared in the majors at 27 with the Cleveland Blues in 1884 as an outfielder. In 32 games, he hit .210 on a team whose average was .237. Two years later, in 1886, he was on the Brooklyn Grays as a regular outfielder hitting .261, missing time in August with a sprained knee. The next year was his last, although he hit .293 in 49 games. His batting average was the same as 22-year-old Adonis Terry and only one point behind team leader Germany Smith. Before and after his major league days, Ernie played several seasons with Peoria.

Ernie was rated a valuable player in 1886, and various teams were eager to sign him. [1]
