Biographical Information[edit]
"Young pitcher Beam Is a tall, stalwart lad weighing 185 pounds, every one of which is solid beef. He has helped to win three different championships in other leagues and hopes that he may assist in landing the pennant for the Phillies." - from Sporting Life, March 30, 1895
Ernie Beam pitched nine games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1895. It was a lively ball era, with the Phillies as a team that year hitting .330 and the team ERA a high 5.47. Even so, Ernie's performance was not impressive. He led the league in saves (with three of them) but, of course, saves as a statistic were unknown at that time. After baseball, he was a policeman in his home town of Mansfield, OH.
Notable Achievements[edit]
- NL Saves Leader (1895)
