Biographical Information[edit]
Enrique Santana pitched in the minor leagues starting in 2018. That year and in 2019, he was in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, in the Dominican Summer League the first year and with the Bristol Pirates of the Appalachian League in 2019, where he was 2-1, 4.44. But like many marginal prospects in the minor leagues when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, he was handed his release.
He resurfaced in 2021 with the New York Yankees organization after a couple of games with the York Revolution in the independent Atlantic League. He went 1-1, 4.37 in 16 games as a reliever for the Tampa Tarpons, then followed that in 2022 by going 0-1, 1.82 in 26 games between Tampa and the Hudson Valley Renegades of the South Atlantic League. He had some control problems, however, as he struck out 35 batters but also walked 28 in 29 2/3 innings. He started 2023 back with Hudson Valley, but his control issues continued, as in 14 innings spread out over 11 outings, he walked 13 and struck out 15. he was handed his walking papers and finished the year with two teams in the Atlantic League, the Spire City Ghost Hounds and Staten Island Ferry Hawks, with mixed results as he gave up 15 walks in 12 1/3 innings.
In 2024, he signed with a newly-formed team in the same circuit, the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars. He was part of a fairy tale game on April 25th against one of his former teams, York. In what was the first game ever played by the new team, former major leaguer Parker Markel started off the game with six hitless innings, then was succeeded by Domingo Jimenez, who pitched two more hitless frames. Thus, Enrique took the mound at the start of the 9th with a no-hitter on the line and quickly proceeded to hit Claran Devenney with his first pitch. However, he soon regained his composure, and retired the next three batters, two on strikeouts, to complete the 4-0 feat and the combined no-no.
