Biographical Information[edit]

Emil Geiss was the brother of Bill Geiss. He was a police officer after his baseball days.

Sporting Life's Chicago, IL correspondent in the May 18, 1887 issue stated that the Chicago White Stockings had signed Emil, and that Geiss had been blacklisted the previous year by St. Paul for not reporting. However, he had been reinstated. The correspondent guessed that Emil would be put at third base, but in fact Geiss ended up playing nine innings as a pitcher, nine as a first baseman, and nine as a second baseman. Sporting News of May 25th said that in his outing as a pitcher he had "slow curves". The Baseball History Daily story referenced below cites newspapers to the effect that his appearances as a pitcher and second baseman were panned, but he got good reviews for his work at first base.

Emil's brother Bill was playing in the minors for the New Orleans Pelicans while Emil was in the majors. Emil also played three years in the minors. He apparently was the pitcher who pitched the most innings for the 1888 London Tecumsehs, a team which also featured Buttercup Dickerson and Patsy Donovan, both of whom hit well that year.
