Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Elvin Beltre played in the minor leagues from 1999 to 2004. He was also known as Elvin Andujar.

Signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic, he played in the Dominican Summer League in 1999 and 2000, but statistics are not readily available. He moved stateside in 2001, appearaing in 58 games for the GCL Reds and 5 for the Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League, combining to hit .286/.350/.455 in 63 games, with 22 stolen bases. He made the Gulf Coast League All-Star team. In 2002, he was assigned to the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League and batted .286 in 40 games, with 5 homers and 20 RBIs. On August 15th, he was traded to the New York Mets along with P Pedro Feliciano and two players to be named later, who turned out to be Brady Clark and Raul Gonzalez, in return for major league pitcher Shawn Estes. Elvin was the only one on the group who never reached the majors. He finished that season with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League, hitting .153 in 16 games.

In 2003, the Mets decided to try to turn him into a pitcher and after extended spring training, sent him to the Kingsport Mets of the Appalachian League to face his first professional hitters. In 4 games, he gave up 5 hits and 5 walks in 4 1/2 innings, leading to 4 runs and an 8.31 ERA. Not pleased with the results, the Mets let him go after the season, and he returned to the Reds, having lost a year at a crucial time in his potential development. Back to playing the outfield, he split his year equally between Billings and Dayton, but results were mediocre, with a combined batting line of .229/.287/.373 in 65 games. It was his final professional season.
