Elrod Hendricks, Jr. was one of the children of Elrod Hendricks from the catcher's first marriage. In November 1983, the Boston Red Sox announced the signing of the 19-year-old, a lefthanded batter (as was his father) who played catcher, first base, and outfield. He got a free-agent contract with their Class A farm club in Elmira, New York.

Ellie Jr. was to report to Boston's minor league camp in Winter Haven. Fla., in March 1984. That March 25, Peter Gammons, then of the Boston Globe, wrote: "Elrod Hendricks Jr., the 19-year-old first baseman and son of the Orioles coach, signed by Red Sox scout Felix Maldonado this winter, has played only 80 games of baseball in his life. He was a fast-pitch softball player in St. Thomas. 'I'd played all of 27 baseball games when I signed,' says father Elrod."

Baseball-Reference.com shows no record for Ellie Jr. as a player. Hendricks himself said in 1999 that he got hurt and was passed over in favor of a bigger-money prospect.
