Eli Jacobs

Biographical Information[edit]

Eli Jacobs was the principal partner in a group that bought the Baltimore Orioles from the estate of Edward Bennett Williams for $70 million in late 1987, with final approval coming a few weeks into the Orioles' near-miraculous 1989 season. For four years Jacobs was the Orioles' Chairman of the Board.

Jacobs' successful run of leveraged buyouts throughout the 1980s quickly fell apart, however, and by the end of the 1993 season the Orioles were sold at auction to a group led by Peter Angelos for $173 million after Jacobs had filed for bankruptcy.
