Biographical Information[edit]

Edwin Ríos made his debut in the major leagues in 2019.

Rios has been a high visibility prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Born in Puerto Rico, he attended high school in Kissimmee, FL and college at Florida International University, and was a 6th round draft pick in 2015.

After playing in the rookie league in 2015, he got a lot of attention in 2016 by hitting .301 with 27 home runs, split among teams at the A, A+ and AA levels. The Dodgers named him their minor league player of the year. In 2017 he continued to impress with a .309 average and 24 home runs at the AA and AAA levels. He was injured for part of 2018, which slowed his rise to the big leagues, but still managed to post a line of .304/.355/.482 in 88 games.

He was on the 40-man roster in 2019, and although hitting under .250, was called up to make his major league debut on June 27th at a time when several Dodger regulars were injured. In his first eight games he posted a decent line of .267/.421/.467 before the regulars returned from the injured list. Because the Dodgers made no secret of their interest in possibly acquiring a starting pitcher or a relief pitcher before the trading deadline, Rios naturally was the subject of trade rumors during the summer, but he stayed put. He hit .277 in 28 games, with 4 homers and 8 RBIs. He did not play in the postseason.

On July 29, 2020, he became the first batter in major league history to hit a two-run leadoff homer. It came in the 13th inning of a game against the Houston Astros, with an additional runner on second base due to the tiebreak rule, giving Los Angeles a 4-2 win.

Rios indicated that he has made very good contacts at the Wide World of Sports complex near Orlando, FL. Barry Larkin helped him with defense, and Carlos Gonzalez and Dee Gordon are friends. [1]
