Biographical Information

Ed Fernandes had a 17-year minor league career, coming up twice to the major league level. In the minors he had a .285 career batting average. During his two stints in the majors, he had exactly 40 plate appearances each time, although he was in more games in 1940 than in 1946.

Fernandes was born in Oakland, CA and played minor league ball beginning at age 17. He hit .305 and .336 in his first two minor league seasons. He was always a catcher in the minors except for one year when he played 20 games at third and another year when he was in 29 games in the outfield.

Coming from the west coast, it's not surprising that Ed played in the PCL. He was on quite a few of the league's teams: Seattle, Portland, L.A., Oakland and Sacramento. He also spent one year in the American Association with St. Paul and a year in the International League with Toronto.

The SABR biography of Billy Holm mentions that Fernandes had an injury in 1943.

This site indicates that Ed was in the U.S. Navy during World War II and after baseball worked as a shipping clerk.

He managed in the minors in 1952 and 1954. His team in 1952, Pocatello, went 78-53. The only other former or future major leaguer on the team was 19-year-old Willie Tasby.
