Biographical Information[edit]
The son of Hall of Famer Eddie Collins, Eddie Collins Jr. attended Yale from 1937-1939, when "Smoky" Joe Wood was the baseball coach. Smoky Joe's son, Joe , was also was a Bulldog in 1939. Collins played for the Philadelphia Athletics before serving in the Navy during World War II. He broke in at 22, batting only .241 with 12 extra base hits in 132 games. The majority of his action came in 1941, playing 80 games as the A's fourth outfielder. Collins Jr. only played two years in the minors, hitting .293/~.352/.352 for the 1940 Baltimore Orioles and leading the International League with 21 stolen bases, and then .291/~.390/.314 for the Jersey City Giants and Buffalo Bisons in 1946. After the war, he worked in the Philadelphia Phillies front office for almost a decade.
