Biographical Information[edit]

Rhesa Edward "Ed" Smith pitched for the 1906 St. Louis Browns, appearing in 19 games, mostly as a starter, and posting a win-loss record of 8-11. As pitchers go, he wasn't a terrible hitter, finishing with a batting average of .204 (the team average was .247) and more than the usual amount of walks.

Browns manager Jimmy McAleer used only six pitchers all year long in 1906, with Smith's 154.2 innings actually the fewest innings of the six. At age 27, Ed was younger than the team average of 28.8.

Ed also had 11 seasons in the minors, winning over 100 games. He spent his pro career far from the coasts, in towns such as Bloomington, Rock Island, South Bend, and Grand Rapids. He managed the South Bend Benders/Grand Rapids Grads in 1911.

He is the second major leaguer named Ed Smith, with the first, Ed Smith, also a pitcher.
