Biographical Information[edit]

Stocky Edmond Moxey, known as "Mondo" to his friends, came up as a catcher in the Bahamas. Bahamian journalist Fred Sturrup viewed him as one of the three best receivers in the nation’s history, along with Frank Sands and Sydney Outten. Moxey started as a catcher in the pros in 1961 too – but in view of his speed, he became primarily an outfielder, though he continued to go back behind the plate from time to time.

Moxey tore up lower levels in the minors, batting .356 for Class A Modesto in 1963 and winning promotion to Double-A. He hit .362 for Quincy of the Midwest League (also Class A) in 1964. He never made it beyond Double-A in the U.S., playing parts of four seasons at that level. In his last pro season, 1969, he played 26 games for Reynosa in the Mexican League, which is classified as Triple A. Over nine years as a pro, he hit .293 with 114 homers.

From his childhood, Moxey also displayed another great athletic talent: swimming and diving. Since retiring from baseball, he has served as one of this sport’s foremost instructors in the Bahamas.
