Biographical Information[edit]
Eddie Mayer had one career save. It came on April 17, 1958 against the St. Louis Cardinals. He relieved Dave Hillman with the Chicago Cubs ahead, 4-3, and got pinch hitter Hal Smith to hit into a double play, and then finished out the game. Glen Hobbie got the win.
Mayer attended the University of California a couple of years after Jackie Jensen had been there. He started in the minor leagues in 1952 and went 17-8 in both 1953 and 1954. Overall, he went 64-59 in 202 games in his eight-year minor league career.
He is not to be confused with the first Ed Mayer.
