Biographical Information[edit]

Mortimer Edward "Ed" Hogan played three years in the majors.

Hogan was born in Illinois during the Civil War and by age 21 was playing for the team in Peoria, IL. He played briefly for the Milwaukee Brewers team in the Union Association in 1884 and then came back to the majors with the New York Metropolitans in the American Association in 1887. He stayed in the same league in 1888, but with the Cleveland Blues.

His biggest success with the bat came that final season. Although his batting average was only .227, it was close to the team average of .234. His OBP of .368 was far above the team OBP of .294. His slugging was also notable: although he appeared in only 78 of the team's 132 games, his 16 doubles were second-highest on the team and his 6 triples were tied for second-highest.

He umpired a couple of years in Chicago city leagues and then was added to the staff of the Southern League. He worked two National League games in 1897.

He died in 1923 in Chicago, IL.
