Biographical Information

Ed Greer played three years in the majors, appearing in the outfield and at catcher. Although 1887 was his strongest year with the bat, it was reported in September 1887 that he had been suspended for intoxication. He died young, around the age of 27.

"Edward Greer, a catcher and outfielder of national reputation, died in Philadelphia, Feb. 14, of consump­tion. Greer's clever work first attracted the attention of the Athletic management, who signed him for the season of 1886. In 1887 he was a member of the Brooklyn team, and the following year found him with the Baltimores. Last spring he started for the West to fill an engagement, but had a hemmorrhage at Altoona, while en route, and was forced to return to this city. He played very little last season, but boasted all winter of what he was going to do the coming sea­son. He was a fine fielder but somewhat weak at the bat. His weakness was a fondness for liquor, which lost him more than one good situation." - Sporting Life's obituary of Ed Greer, in the February 26, 1890 issue
