Biographical Information[edit]

Right-handed pitcher Ed Albrecht from St. Louis had a very big year in the lower minors in 1949 when he won 29 games and struck out 389 batters to establish all-time records in the Cotton States League, pitching for the Pine Bluff Cardinals. He made the long jump from Class C ball to the majors late that year, and on the final day of the season made his first big league start for his hometown St. Louis Browns with a five-inning, rain-shortened, one-hit victory over the Chicago White Sox. He would pitch just two more games in the majors, both for the Browns in 1950. With the Brownies, he wore number 35. Ed had a very good minor league career. He started in 1945 with the Class D Bristol Twins of the Appalachian League, going 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA and finished his eight-year run in 1953 with the San Antonio Missions of the AA Texas League. He had a minor league career record of 87-67 with a 3.91 ERA. Ed died December 29, 1979, in Centreville, IL, where he was employed with a trucking company.
