Biographical Information[edit]

Dwayne Henry was signed as a 2nd round pick in the 1980 amateur draft by the Texas Rangers and scout Joe Branzell.

It took him quite a while to find a regular job in the majors, as from 1984, when he made his debut with the Rangers, until 1989, he appeared in the majors every year, but never pitched as many as 20 games. In three of these years, he had an ERA above 8.00, but even when his ERA was an excellent 2.57 with 20 strikeouts in 21 innings in 1985, he failed to stick. He finally managed to find some traction in his second season with the Atlanta Braves in 1990, when he made 34 appearances, although his ERA was pretty bad at 5.63. But he followed that with his best two seasons: in 1991, he went 3-2, 3.19 in 52 games for the Houston Astros, and in 1992 he was 3-3, 3.33 in 60 games for the Cincinnati Reds. However, his final two seasons were poor, with an ERA of 6.44 between two teams in 1993, and 6.23 in 10 games for the Detroit Tigers in 1995. His bugbear was always his control: in 1986, he walked 22 batters in 19 1/3 innings for Texas, then had 9 walks in 10 and 10 1/3 innings the next two years. Even in his two good season, his walk rate was quite high, with 39 in 67 2/3 innings in 1991 and 44 in 83 2/3 innings in 1992. It then peaked again after that, as he walked more batters then he struck in each of his last two seasons.

In between his final two seasons in the majors, he pitched for the Chunichi Dragons of the Central League in Japan in 1994, going 3-7, 3.48. He was in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan in 1997 and 1998, then joined the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic League halfway through 1998 and pitched there again in 1999. He returned to the CPBL in 2000, then went briefly to the Mexican League and last pitched back in the Atlantic League with the Newark Bears in 2001 at age 39.
