Biographical Information[edit]
With a last name like "Holland", and given the frequency with which players were called "Dutch" at the time, it was not surprising that Robert Clyde Holland ended up called Dutch Holland.
There was a movie made in the 1950's, starring Jimmy Stewart as a "Dutch Holland", a former professional baseball player who joined the Strategic Air Command. However, that Dutch Holland was loosely based on the experiences of Ted Williams rather than on this Dutch Holland. Stewart played a third baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals, while this Dutch Holland played outfield for different teams.
There is another player named Holland who was nicknamed Dutch, but that player is known as Bill Holland. He was in the American League in 1939 while this Dutch Holland was in the National League in 1939.
