Biographical Information

Pitcher Duane Shaffer was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 11th round of the 1969 amateur draft, and since then, he has spent all but three years in their organization in various capacities. As a player, he went 62-44 in 11 seasons on the mound. He tied Roger Nelson for the 1976 American Association lead with 16 saves. As a scout, he was responsible for drafting Jack McDowell and Mark Buehrle. He was the Director of Scouting from 1991 to 2000, then worked in Baseball Operations in 2001. In 2002, he was named Senior Director of Player Personnel for the Sox. He was relieved of his duties in June 2007. In 2008, Shaffer is the "Special Assistant to the Executive VP, Player Personnel" for the Seattle Mariners. In 2010, Shaffer was a major league scout for the Mariners and in 2011-2013, he was Western Supervisor of Pro Scouting.

His son, Josh, played in the White Sox system for a time.
