Biographical Information

Catcher Doug Gwosdz, who was nicknamed "Eyechart", was in the majors for four seasons with the San Diego Padres. He was part of their pennant-winning team in 1984 but did not play in the postseason that year.

Gwosdz was born in Houston, TX and attended high school there. He was drafted by the Padres in the second round of the 1978 amateur draft. Doug played 11 seasons in the minors, retiring after the 1989 season. He spent all of 1983 in San Diego as the main back-up to Terry Kennedy, playing a career-high 39 games. He hit his only major league homer that year, a three-run shot off Bill Gullickson of the Montreal Expos in the second game of a doubleheader on August 21st, keying a 5-2 win. He only had one other RBI all season and hit a measly .109.

The seemingly random collection of letters that compose his last name mean "nail" in various Slavic languages, although he pronounced it "GOOSH", far from the original Slavic pronunciation.

After baseball he worked for UPS for many years, and is now retired.
