Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Doug Davis had cups of coffee with the California Angels in 1988 and Texas Rangers in 1992 before embarking on a coaching/managing career.
Davis began his coaching career as the hitting coach for the Lake Elsinore Storm in 1995. He was the minor league field coordinator for the Montreal Expos in 2001 and the Florida Marlins in 2002. During the 2001 offseason, owner Jeffrey Loria sold the Montreal Expos to the other Major League Baseball owners and bought the Florida Marlins. As part of that process, he took most of the Expos coaching staff and minor league development staff with him to Florida. Davis returned as field coordinator in 2003 until Marlins manager Jeff Torborg was fired on May 10th and replaced by Jack McKeon. Davis took over as Marlins bench coach and stayed in that role through the 2004 season. Davis spent 2005, his final year in the Marlins organization, as their minor league catching & baserunning coordinator.
In 2006, he took over as the skipper of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to begin his work in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. After the 2006 season he was named manager of the Syracuse Chiefs where he stayed two years. Davis spent 2009 as the Blue Jays' minor league catching instructor. He worked the next several years as Toronto's minor league field coordinator. Davis was fired in August, 2016 when the new management team under President Mark Shapiro decided to implement changes to the player development system.
Davis joined the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in 2017 and served in different capacities. He was a defensive coach in 2017 and the bullpen coach in 2018-2019. He was scheduled to manage Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. He did manage the team in 2021-2022.
Davis moved to the Texas Rangers organization in 2023 and managed the Round Rock Express. In his first season with the Express, he guided the E-Train to the club’s first playoff appearance since 2019. The team's 89 total wins were the most regular-season wins in franchise history and Davis oversaw the longest winning streak in franchise history when the Express won 14 consecutive games from August 8-23. Davis returned to manage the Express in 2024.
