Biographical Information[edit]
Dong-il Son played for the South Korean national team and in the Korea Baseball Organization then became a college coach.
Son was with South Korea when they finished second in the 1990 Asian Games; at the time, baseball was a demonstration sport and not a medal event. He began his pro career with the Lotte Giants in 1994; the outfielder hit .226/~.278/.351 in 48 games. In a career-high 84 games and 197 at-bats in 1995, he hit 5 homers with a .203/~.266/.315 batting line. His time dropped from there - 28 games and 32 AB in 1996 (only 3 hits, 2 of them doubles, no walks, 16 whiffs), 15 games and 35 AB in 1997 (.257/~.316/.400), 26 games and 26 AB in 1998 (only two singles, two walks, 14 whiffs) and two at-bats (both Ks) in 1999. He finished at .200/~.255/.309 in 460 AB in the KBO, with 18 doubles and 10 homers. He had 58 runs and 40 RBI and was 12-for-18 in steals. He moved to the SK Wyverns the next year but did not get into a game.
He then coached for Wonkwang University starting in 2006, becoming director (head coach??) in 2016.
