Donaldo Lugo played two seasons in the minors. In 1974, Lugo hit .350/.408/.427 for the the Parras Saraperos club of the Mexican Center League. He finished third in the league in average, second in hits (105, 3 shy of the most) and second in swipes (one shy of the most). He also led the league's second basemen putouts (204) and fielding percentage (.976). He was named the All-Star at 2B.

In 1975, Lugo starred for Cortazar, leading the Mexican Center League in hits (102), at-bats (294) and steals (15, tied). He was 6th in average (.347/.384/.425) and led the league's second sackers in putouts (207), assists (190) and double plays (55) while finishing second in fielding percentage (.971). He also appeared briefly in the Mexican League, going 4 for 23 with a double and two walks as the Saraperos de Saltillo's backup 2B behind another Lugo, Gabriel Lugo.
