Biographical Information[edit]

Iowa native Don Black spent nine active seasons in professional baseball from 1937 to 1948. On July 10, 1947, he pitched a no-hitter for the Cleveland Indians against his former team, the Philadelphia Athletics, at Cleveland Stadium. His career ended when he suffered a brain aneurysm at the end of the following season, while batting in the second inning of a game on September 13th. He collapsed after hitting a foul ball, then walked to the dugout under his own power. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he fell into a coma. Despite being unable to continue on with the Indians, who went on to win the 1948 World Series, Don was voted a full World Series share on their series win. He was released from the hospital in late October and made a full recovery, but never played professionally again, except for an appearance in an exhibition game the following season.
