Biographical Information[edit]

The 1990 college baseball batting champ was Don Barbara who hit .474, 7 HR, 61 RBI, with 52 BB in 215 ABs (good for an OBP of ~.577 and a SLG of .707) for Long Beach State. He was the drafted in the 24th round by the California Angels in the 1990 amateur draft. He went directly to high class A with the Palm Springs Angels, where he hit .291, 4 HR, 12 RBI with 30 BB in only 203 ABs. In 1991 played for the low class A Quad City Angels where he hit .288, 5 HR, 48 RBI, with 59 BB in only 226 ABs. Also played for AA Midland Angels where he hit .362, 10 HR, 40 RBI with 37 BB in 224 ABs. For the year he hit .324, 15 HR, 88 RBI, 96 BB. In 1992, he moved up to AAA Edmonton Trappers, where he hit .298 4 HR, 63 RBI, 78 BB.

In 1993 he hit .294, 4 HR, 38 RBI, 42 BB in 255 ABs for the AAA New Orleans Zephyrs, a Milwaukee Brewers farm club. In 1994 he hit .367 in 30 AB for the Los Angeles Dodgers AA San Antonio Missions, and .351 12 HR, 37 RBI, 32 BB in only 168 AB for their AAA Albuquerque Dukes. In 1995 he ended up with the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox where he hit only .217, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 12 BB in 129 ABs. Having failed to make the majors, Barbara signed with the Long Beach Riptide in the Western League and finished fifth in the circuit in batting (.335) and third in OBP (.421). Barbara's final season came in 1996 with Long Beach as he hit .299 and slugged .478.

He had AAA numbers of .295/~.399/.432. Per 162 games he hit 29 2B, 11 HR, 74 RBI, 82 BB, 78 K, and 9 SB.

Don was the hitting coach at Long Beach State University from 1997-1999 and 2001-2005. He also spent time as the Assistant coach at Sac State from 2006 to 2008. From 2009-2014 he was an assistant coach on Ed Sprague Jr.'s staff at the University of the Pacific. Barbara became the head coach at St. John Bosco High School in the 2014-2015 school year.
