Dmitry Shlyapnikov played for the USSR national team in the 1990 Goodwill Games. In the 1991 Intercontinental Cup, he went 2 for 17 with two walks and played error-free ball in left field for the Soviets. He later became a Lieutenant Colonel in the Russian Air Force. He coached for the Russian national team in the 1998 Baseball World Cup, 2001 Baseball World Cup, 2003 Baseball World Cup and 2003 European Championship and managed them in the 2007 European Championship.
