Biographical Information

Kentucky native Dick West spent fourteen seasons in professional baseball from 1935 to 1950.

The catcher-outfielder spent six partial up-and-down seasons with the Cincinnati Reds from 1938 to 1943. He appeared in a total of 119 games and hit for a .221 average with three home runs. This was his only time spent in the major leagues.

West spent twelve seasons in the minor leagues with nine different clubs. His best year seems to have come in 1939 when he hit at a .321 clip with 15 home runs for the Baltimore Orioles of the International League in 108 games.

He finished out his twelve seasons in the minor leagues in 1950. He had appeared in 961 games and hit at a .299 average with 85 home runs. West left the game at 34 years of age.

West spent two years (1944-1945) in the United States Navy during World War II.

After baseball, West was a co-founder of the Kelly Box and Packaging Company and was in the wholesale lumber business until his retirement. Richard Thomas West died on March 13, 1996 at the age of 80 in Fort Wayne, IN.
