Biographical Information[edit]
Dick Thornburgh, a former Governor of Pennsylvania and Attorney General of the United States, was a serious baseball fan. When the position of Commissioner of Baseball opened up in the 1990s, he made it through several cuts.
He wrote a foreword to David Pietrusza's book Judge and Jury: The Life and Times of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis.
Thornburgh's papers were given to the University of Pittsburgh, and the archivist of his collection noted as follows:
". . . you will also see evidence of Dick’s passion for baseball in some incredibly detailed, minutely hand written 'Sporting News' issues put together weekly in connection with a much loved table top baseball game, and also a baseball autographed by Honus Wagner and Dick’s own program with his scrupulous recording of the plays from the 1960 final World Series Game which was won for the Pirates by Bill Mazeroski`s famous ninth inning over-the-wall home run at Forbes Field."
