Biographical Information[edit]
Harry "Dick" Bayless played 19 games for the Cincinnati Reds during the end of the 1908 season, mostly in right field. The regular right fielder that year was Mike Mitchell.
Bayless was in the minors between 1902 and 1917, hitting over .300 several times. He played at Joplin three seasons and in the PCL parts of five seasons. He was part of a top minor league team, the 1907 Wichita Jobbers, who had a record of 98-35. Dick's batting average that year was fifth in the league. He managed the Venice Tigers in the PCL in 1915.
MiLB indicates that he died in a copper mine explosion in New Mexico in 1920. [1] Through 2019, there has not been another big leaguer named Bayless, but Jonah Bayliss comes close.
