Biographical Information

Dick Adkins was born in Electra, TX, in far northern Texas, relatively close to Wichita Falls, TX. He also died there of cancer at age 35. At age 22, he appeared in three games for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics in 1942. Dick's career, like many of his generation, was interrupted by World War II. He played five seasons in the minors before coming up near the end of the 1942 season. Most years in the minors, Dick tended to hit around .300 with moderate power playing shortstop. In World War II, Dick served as a sergeant, and he did not get back to playing professional baseball until 1947. He played three years for the Birmingham Barons and one for the Natchez Indians (who he also managed) before ending his pro career. After baseball, he worked as a warehouseman (per deadballera.com).
