Biographical Information[edit]
Reliever Derrick DePriest played in the minor and independent leagues on-and-off from 2000 to 2009. He was taken by the Montreal Expos in the 17th round of the 2000 amateur draft, a few picks after outfielder Josh Willingham and pitcher Paul Maholm, and ahead of catcher Mike Napoli and pitcher Rich Harden. He was 1-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 32 appearances between three clubs his first year, then didn't play in 2001. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 2002, but spent just 5 games in their system. He also played in the indy leagues in 2002, and spent the rest of his career there, save for a spell in the Kansas City Royals chain in 2006. In 2003, between two clubs, he had a 1.50 ERA in 27 appearances, averaging more than a strikeout per inning. After not playing again 2004, he was 7-5 with a 1.81 ERA in 48 games, saving 13 games and again averaging more than a K per frame, again between two teams. He was 0-4 with a 7.01 ERA in his stay in the Kansas City chain in 2006, then went 0-2 with 20 saves, 64 strikeouts and a 1.06 ERA in 59 1/3 innings over 51 games for the Lancaster Barnstormers in 2007. He was an Atlantic League All-Star that year. With the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, he had a 2.09 ERA and 13 saves in 39 games. He had a 3.51 ERA in 33 games for the Edmonton Capitals in 2009, his final campaign.
Overall, DePriest was 20-26 with 83 saves, 212 games finished and a 2.76 ERA in 295 games over 8 seasons. In 392 innings, he allowed 355 hits and 97 walks (1.153 WHIP), while striking out 368 batters. In the affiliated minors, he was 1-7, 4.52 in 61 games and in independent ball, he was 19-19, 2.26 in 234 games. At that level, he had 307 Ks in 306 1/3 innings.
In college, DePriest switched from overhand to submarine pitching in 1997 [1].
DePriest went to college on a football scholarship. He was the punter for North Carolina in 1996, and held for extra points and field goals in 1997-1998. He had been all-state punter in high school.
