Biographical Information[edit]
Derek Thomas worked his first game as a major league umpire on April 23, 2023. Before that, he worked as a minor league umpire for a number of seasons, staring in 2014. He worked a total of 85 games during his first season in the Show.
Growing up in Cedar Rapids, IA, he was a very good high school pitcher and then played baseball in college for three years at Lewis University near Chicago, IL. He then turned to umpiring to make money on the side, and entered umpire school when he realized he enjoyed the work quite a lot. He graduated from umpiring school early in 2014 and earned a job in Arizona League as one of the best students in his group, starting his professional career.
