Biographical Information[edit]
Starter Derek Livernois pitched in the Boston Red Sox system from 1985 to 1993. He spent a full year and part of two others at Triple-A, but never ascended to the majors.
He was taken in the 15th round of the 1985 amateur draft, a few picks ahead of pitcher Rich DeLucia, and was signed by scout George Digby. After a season at Low A, he joined the Single A ranks in 1986, where he would remain for the next four seasons. 1987 was especially solid—he was 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA in 28 games (25 starts), completing 5 and shutting out 1 for the Greensboro Hornets. In 159 2/3 innings, he had 164 Ks. He departed Single A with a flourish, as well, as he went 10-8 with 7 complete games, 2 shutouts and a 3.50 ERA in 26 games (23 starts) for the Lynchburg Red Sox in 1989; his 151 Ks led the Carolina League.
His first try at Double-A was a bright spot, as well, as he lived up to Baseball America's ranking him the #8 prospect in Boston's chain. In 15 games (14 starts) for the New Britain Red Sox, he went 9-2 with a 1.98 ERA in 1990. That prompted Baseball America to rank him the Red Sox's #6 prospect going into 1991. He reached Triple-A for the first time that year, but underwhelmed by going 1-2, 10.53 in 5 starts for the Pawtucket Red Sox; he was 4-4, 6.27 on the year as a whole. After a 14-9, 3.78 ERA 1992 split between Double- and Triple-A (he led the Eastern League in homers allowed that year with 13), he went 2-6, 5.72 in 27 games (14 starts) for Pawtucket in his lone full Triple-A campaign, 1993, to wrap up his career.
Overall, Livernois went 63-49 with 21 complete games and 5 shutouts in 176 games (134 starts) over 9 seasons. In 906 2/3 innings, he allowed 876 hits and 343 walks (1.344 WHIP), while striking out 758 batters. At Triple-A, he went 6-10 with a 5.99 ERA in 38 games (25 starts).
