Biographical Information[edit]

Dennis Overby was a Milwaukee Braves phenom who seemed destined for great things until he injured his arm. He was a bonus baby who at one point struck out Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, and Joe Adcock in succession in an intra-squad game in spring training. The sportswriters voted him the most likely successor to Warren Spahn. Then one day he slipped and hurt his arm, and was told he would never pitch again. The book "A False Spring" by Pat Jordan chronicles his reaction, as he continued to come to spring training each year.

He was a left-handed pitcher for the 1959 McCook Braves. Overby had a 8-2 record in 1959, and as well, led the Nebraska State League in strike outs that year with 136. He later coached Chetek High School for 36 years.
