Biographical Information[edit]

Dennis Hurtarte was a minor league infielder. His father Ronald Hurtarte has been a scout.

Hurtarte signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011; Rene Gayo was the scout. Hurtarte split 2012 between the DSL Pirates 1 (.191/.296/.234 in 17 G) and DSL Pirates 2 (.260/.330/.320 in 30 G), fielding .938 overall at 1B. The switch-hitter produced at a .247/.335/.327 clip for the 2013 DSL Pirates 1 and again fielded .983. He hit .353/.421/.470 as the Guatemalan national team's top hitter in the 2013 Bolivarian Games but had no runs and one RBI. Pittsburgh released him in 2014.

In the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, he was the starting first baseman for the Guatemalan national team. He went only 1 for 11 with five whiffs, his one hit being a homer off Miguel Martinez. He also made two errors at first, fielding .926. The only other Guatemalan batter to homer in the tourney was Manuel Hernández, who hit 3.
