Denis Laza debuted for the La Habana Cowboys in 2008-2009. He hit .308/.393/.421 for the Serie Nacional titlists but fielded only .907 in the outfield.

Laza improved his batting line to .302/.432/.490 in 2009-2010 and his fielding percentage all the way to .990. Playing mostly center field, he had 9 assists in 89 games. He led the Serie Nacional with 425 plate appearances, tied for 4th with 19 times hit by pitch, was 10th with 60 walks, ranked third with 7 triples (behind Maikel Cáceres and Ariel Sánchez) and tied for 4th with 84 runs, trailing only Yulieski Gourriel, Ramón Tamayo and Yoennis Céspedes.
