Biographical Information[edit]

Dean Wilkins was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 2nd round of the 1986 MLB January Draft from San Diego Mesa College. In the summer of 1987 the Yankees traded him to the Chicago Cubs for whom he would make his major league debut in 1989. Wilkins pitched parts of two seasons with the Cubs (1989-1990) and one season with the Houston Astros (1991). In these three partial seasons Wilkins had a 3-1 record with 2 saves, but an unsightly 7.55 ERA. During this time he appeared in 25 games, all in relief. Wilkins concluded his professional career in 1992 in the Milwaukee Brewers organization.

Wilkins had two sons who followed his baseball path. His older son Ryan Wilkins played baseball at Palomar College (2010-2011) and North Carolina State University (2012). A younger son, Zach Wilkins, played at Palomar (2013-2014) and the University of Nevada, Reno (2015-2016) before moving into the coaching ranks.
